Could acorns lead to an up 'tick' in Lyme disease?

Could%20acorns%20lead%20to%20an%20up%20%27tick%27%20in%20Lyme%20disease%3F This year's tick population, including the increased number of the treatments throughout the Mid-Atlantic, has a somewhat surprising cause ... acorns.

Oak trees produce an extremely high number of acorns, which leads to an increase in the white-footed mouse population. In turn, the deer tick (or black-legged tick), has ample supply of its preferred food source. As a result, you may spot more of the most common tick in the Mid-Atlantic in your backyard.

Ranging from the size of a sesame seed to 5/8-inch long, most ticks are ectoparasites, or parasites that live on the surface of their host. The deer tick goes through three life stages - larva, nymph and adult - requiring a blood meal during each stage. Typically, ticks feed on wildlife where they can come into contact with dangerous bacteria, including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The bacteria may be transferred to humans through tick bites.

"In most cases, a tick must be attached to your body for 24 to 36 hours to transmit disease. As a result, prevention and early detection are critical," says Phil Pierce, entomologist and technical services manager for Western Pest Services. "It is important to always check yourself, children and pets promptly after spending time outdoors in wooded or grassy areas and to take steps to limit your exposure to these blood-sucking pests."

Pierce recommends the following tips to help you avoid ticks when outdoors:

* Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when working outside near woodlands, fields and areas with shrubbery and tall grass.

* Choose light-colored clothing so it's easier to identify any ticks on your body, and tuck pants into socks or boots to prevent ticks from crawling into pant legs.

* Apply an EPA-approved insect repellant on clothing and exposed skin near potential entrance areas (pants cuff, shirt cuff, collar and around socks). You can also purchase clothing treated with materials that repel and control ticks.

Ticks generally do not infest areas that are well maintained. To help control tick populations around the home, keep vegetation in the yard trimmed, especially along the edges of your property.

Should you encounter ticks, it is best to remove them with fine point tweezers. Grasp the tick as close to the point of the bite as possible. Gently, but firmly, lift the tick at the head with tweezers. Avoid using rubbing alcohol, nail polish, hot matches, petroleum jelly or other items to remove ticks as these may startle them, causing them to regurgitate and possibly infect you with disease or bacteria.

"Ticks are a year-round pest, so we expect residents will continue to encounter this pest into the fall," adds Pierce.
Contact your local pest management professional should you suspect tick activity in or around your home. Experts also recommend consulting your doctor should you notice an attached tick lodged onto your body, as well as working with your veterinarian to make sure your pets are protected.

It's high time to upgrade your faucets and toilets

When considering your home's plumbing, you might be thinking of that old adage "why fix something if it ain't broke?" But did you know that old and inefficient plumbing might actually mean that you are literally pouring your money down the drain every month? A call to your plumber might really save you money in the end if you upgrade the plumbing in your home.

When were your current plumbing fixtures installed? Did they come with the house when you bought it? Old toilets use up a lot of water with each flush, which is bad for both the environment and for your wallet. Are you putting off having that leaky faucet repaired because you just don't want to spend the money right now? The average faucet leak can waste hundreds of gallons of water per year. If it's a hot water faucet that's leaking, you are losing money both with the wasted water and with the wasted electricity or gas that is heating that water.

Or what if your problem is slow drains? You might decide to take the easy step of pouring liquid corrosives down the drain to clear out the blockage. This is actually a bad idea. The corrosive chemicals in drain cleaner will harm your sewer pipes, perhaps necessitating an extremely expensive repair in the future. In addition, the environmental impact of pouring such chemicals down the drain and into the water supply can have serious ramifications for the future of our planet.

If you've been putting off plumbing repairs or upgrades, you really might want to consider having a professional technician visit your home. Plumbers can let you know if repairs are needed or if there are upgrades available to your current plumbing that can actually save you money. There are many options, such as low flow or dual flush toilets that can help you stop wasting water and upgrade your home.

Having your new toilet installed by a plumber will ensure that your system is up to code and works efficiently and properly. A plumber can also help you to repair your leaky faucets, or assist you by installing water saving devices such as low flow faucets or aerators on your sinks. They can also help by providing professional sewer cleaning that will fix your slow drains without causing serious corrosion to the pipes in your home and damage to the environment.

These days, everyone is looking to save money where they can. By having a professional plumber inspect your pipes and see what upgrades and repairs can be done in your home, you can save yourself money on wasted water and utility bills. In addition you'll be adding to the value of one of your most important investments, your home.

Details on carpet stain removal

Carpet stain removal can be a daunting task. It should also be done with much care and precaution to prevent damage on the carpet. While using the vacuum cleaner will do fine, it will only remove the dirt. Stains are different, thus, they should be treated differently.

Regardless of the approach employed in removing the stains, it is best to act immediately and quickly. If you wait in doing the cleaning, you risk ruining your carpet for good. Whether oil, wax, solid or liquid substances are spilled on the carpet, you need to grab a clean cloth to remove the solid substances or what can be removed from the stain.

Then you have to blot out as much of the stain as possible. If a liquid substance spilled the carpet, there might occur wicking. Wicking means that the liquid substances have pooled at the bottom of your carpet. Hence, it will weaken the fiber of your carpet, causing the stain to spread and resurface; and eventually, serious damage is done on your carpet.

To prevent wicking, you need to cover the area with a thick dry cloth, and weigh it down with thick books or something that is heavy. Leave it overnight and remove the stain as normal in the following day.

In the morning, when you are certain that no more liquid or staining material will come out, blot out the stain using a dampen cloth or sponge. Avoid scrubbing the carpet as it would weaken the fiber and cause the stain to spread to other areas.

Blotting the stain gently will remove the stain without causing further damage to the carpet. If the stain remains after blotting it with water, you may want to squirt mild dish washing liquid onto it to clean. Blot the stain gently and let it sit for an hour before you blot again with a cool damp sponge or cloth until the stain is totally removed.

There are many carpet stain removal products available in the market in case you do not like to use dishwashing liquid detergent. Commercial products designed for removing stains vary based on what types of stains on your carpet.

For them to be effective, you need to figure out what type of stains your carpet has. If it is greasy like oils for cooking, body, automotive or moisturizing, use grease-based stain removal products.

If the stains are acid-based like coffee or urine, your choices are oil-based or acid-based products. In oil-based, the stains are dissolved, while in acid-based, the chemical quality of the spots are changed in order to make them easy to remove.

If you are not certain on the type of stain your carpet has, choose the all-purpose type of carpet stain removal product.

In all your undertakings, it is best to test the carpet stain removal product in a corner of the carpet or in any out-of-the-way area of the carpet, lest, you may risk creating a faded spot that may look more hideous than the stain itself.

Five renovations to make an even bigger splash with your backyard pool

Five%20renovations%20to%20make%20an%20even%20bigger%20splash%20with%20your%20backyard%20pool If you added a pool to your home in the past few years, or moved into a house with an existing pool, you may wonder what more you can do to enhance the value and enjoyment your pool brings to your home and family. You may even think there's not much you can do beyond keeping it clean and well maintained.

"Pools are a great investment, and the vast majority of owners say their pool is a great place to entertain," says Bill Weber, president and CEO of the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP). "Fortunately, some simple upgrades and renovations can help pool owners enjoy their investment even more."

APSP points to five renovations that can offer homeowners the most satisfaction and value for their investment. The Association suggests homeowners consult with and hire an APSP-certified professional for the best possible results from any of these renovations:

1. Resurfacing - If your in-ground pool is made from concrete, time and use can cause the surface to deteriorate and become rough or even cracked. Resurfacing can restore the beauty and comfort of the pool and extend its functional life. Choose options that provide durability, and consider multiple manufacturers' products to ensure the best selection. For pools with a vinyl interior, a host of new patterns, available for replacement liners, can transform the appearance of the pool overnight. Fiberglass pool owners also have several resurfacing options. Consult with an APSP-certified professional to determine the best product to make your fiberglass pool look like new.

2. New tile - Just as a kitchen backsplash can transform the overall look of the room, tile can set the tone for how your pool looks. Pool tile options are vast, and changing the tile is one of the most dramatic improvements you can make; it will give you the biggest bang for your buck in terms of appearance.

3. Change the look of the pool deck - The current design trend is to extend the look of interior flooring out into the pool area to create the effect of an outdoor family room. Deck choices range from man-made and natural materials to staining existing concrete. Know that old concrete does not necessarily need to be removed. Often you can fix unsightly cracks and dated concrete decks with a thick overlay and new finish.

Most%20renovations%20are%20quite%20affordable 4. Add a water feature - Installing a waterfall or fountain is a great way to bring the sound and beauty of moving water to your outdoor environment. Water features also create a strong focal point for the pool. A dramatic spillover or sheer water feature can be dynamic additions to an ordinary pool.

5. Lighting - While safety is a primary function of lights, today's pool lighting also adds touches of beauty and pizzazz. Standard incandescent and halogen pool lights are functional staples, and fiber optic lighting can add striking color to a nighttime poolscape. Fiber optics are especially great around pools and landscaping because there's no electrical current to worry about. Long-lasting LED replacement lights can typically be installed with little or no modification to the existing pool. The colored LED lights can create an entirely new mood around your pool while providing energy savings at the same time.

"Of course, there are many more renovations and improvements to consider," Weber says. "Digital controls make operating pool equipment easier than ever, allowing you to control lighting, heating and cleaning with the touch of the button. And upgrades like adding a salt chlorinator system, solar cover and heater can improve the functionality and efficiency of a pool."

Keep in mind, you don't have to do everything at once. Pool renovations can be done over several seasons, allowing you to make the improvements and fund your investment at a pace that works for you. Of course, to ensure you get the most for your money, you'll want to hire an experienced pool contractor. You can find an APSP certified building or service professional through the organization's website, www.apsp.org. APSP-certified professionals are required to demonstrate proven knowledge of design, construction and service, follow a strict code of ethics, and must engage in continuing education to maintain their certification.

"Most renovations are quite affordable, and can dramatically change the look of your backyard," Weber says. "It's important to ensure your project is performed by a certified professional who can help you turn your vision into reality safely, efficiently and cost-effectively."

Easy ways to renovate your kitchen

Do you think your kitchen is a mess? Are you frustrated over the fact that your toaster is not working because your coffee maker is on? This is the result of a poor electric connection that is plaguing your kitchen. Your gas might not be working with faulty supply and you are down to your last stove top. Your countertops are stained and your cabinets are broken. You have to address all the leaking taps as well. In short you are frustrated with the condition that your kitchen is in. You need a complete renovation of your kitchen, and you are not the only one.

You may have your reservations about renovating your kitchen. After all, there's all the noise, dust and lack of mobility while your kitchen is getting renovated. Also, there is the cost factor to consider. However, with a little planning in mind you can take care of all these things in a manner that works for you. You can make use of all the resources available in the market to make sure that you have what it takes to renovate your kitchen and live through the process. It is actually a very simple process if you think about it. All the information that you have and all the products that you need are available. All you need to do is make the right choices and you are set to renovate your kitchen. Of course, your kitchen will be unavailable for use for the next few days. Therefore, you need to make sure that you have made arrangements so your daily routine is not affected. This is most important as the kitchen forms an important part of your household. Therefore, you need to make sure that you have arrangements ready as a substitute for not using your kitchen.

There are many things to consider while renovating your kitchen. You need to seek out what you require from your kitchen first. If your gas is not working, then you need to change your stoves. If you are not getting proper electric connection, then you need to change your lines. If your piping is not working, then you need to get a proper plumber. These are the essentials of a functional kitchen. Check them one by one and make sure to have a list of things to repair.

The next important factor to consider is that the renovations being done should enhance the look of your kitchen. This would mean cosmetic modifications to your kitchen, which would come in form of countertops and cabinets. Marble countertops will give your kitchen a grand luxurious look that would enhance the quality of your kitchen. You can purchase such countertops from home or kitchen renovators. You should look for one stop shops for all your kitchen renovation needs. This will help you to get all the assistance you will need for your kitchen renovation.
